Safety Policy

Childnet has made very effort to ensure that the interactive activities provided through Net Detectives are fun and safe for children to use in the classroom.

In particular we have taken the following steps:

bullet

No teacher (or school) can register for an activity without offline verification by the Childnet team of his or her bona fides.

bullet

The Action Centre where live exchanges take place is only open for individual activities at specified times, and will only be open when an adult expert moderator (see 3) is present. Children cannot use the interactive features of the Net Detectives site on their own.

bullet

All communication through the Net Detectives Action Centre is moderated i.e. any message sent by a school team is first approved by an adult expert in the Control Centre before being posted to the global message area where every participant can see it. This allows any inappropriate or frivolous messages to be filtered out.

bullet

There is no facility for student teams to communicate directly with each other through the Net Detectives web site.

bullet

Participants are discouraged from providing personal details, and only the Project Manager will have access to the e-mail addresses of teachers participating in the activity. Individual children's e-mail addresses are not required.

bullet

Moderators are selected for their educational and law enforcement experience, and have been subject to child protection checks. Specialist exercises may require some external experts but these will always operate under the supervision of the Childnet Project Manager, a retired police officer.

Childnet has also developed general Internet safety resources about children's use of the Internet for parents, teachers and children themselves. See www.kidsmart.org.uk for details.
